Sulla danza
Edited by Ermini, Gasparotti, Nancy, Sala Grau, Zanardi – Cronopio 2017
In recent years, dance has also intensified its presence in our country, on and outside the scenes, in the plots of the most varied discourses; the audiovisual world takes it back with unusual frequency, films it, participates in its configurations and increases its archive. What does this constant dance promotion and communication mean?
We should understand that its attractiveness has something to teach about our Time for the continuous research on space setting and the creation of new gestures (This happens more or less consciously).
Dance must be more often considered because its promotion doesn’t seem to help the real nature of its performance.

Dance is one of the most ancient arts, an act of creativity, a form of existence and of thought that is expressed through body movements.
This book pauses and investigates an original path that comes directly from people who practice dance and process it, getting the reader in contact with gestures and movements. In this sense, the graphic design convey the poetics and intelligence of the gesture, the tension of the body in motion and its ability to expand space and go beyond it. This is thanks to the evocative images of the artist Francesco Santosuosso and the illustrations of the students of the European Institute of Design in Milan who worked, starting from the texts, under his direction.
The book speaks about the meaning of dance, what this art can offer to everyone and it does it by remembering the steps of its history running continuously through past and present, deepening 900’ revolution. This period led western society to a specific insight on body movement and on its spiritual aspect. It gives space to the many forms of research in contemporary world, interacting with important researchers and teachers like Eugenia Casini Ropa, Elisa Guzzo Vaccarino and Marinella Guatterini. At last it’s a book that gives word to people who dance: Nuria Sala, dancer, choreographer and teacher of Bharatanatyam Indian dance speaks about herself and her experience inspiring I.E.D of Milan, students’ illustrations. The texts by Michela Bianchi creator and curator give a narration thread that shows the various dimensions of dance and gives stress on its verticality.

Hands in Classical Indian Dance theatre Bharatanatyam extract by Nuria Sala’s article.
Hands have an important role in Classical Indian Theatre especially in Bharatanatyam, one of the most ancient Indian dances, an art that includes other arts deeply connected to spirituality and emotions that I dance and teach, says Nuria. The top of the dancer’s finger are painted red to better describe the poetry of the story adding symbolic meaning.
The refined gestured dance gives elegance to the body energy that comes from the artist’s soul leaving marks in the space around. Mudra, meaning “Seal” is based on a specific code of movements and positions of hand and fingers.
Dancing beyond
Dance essays by Dominique Dupuy
The Ritual of the Dancer transformation and manifestation.
Resumed in Nuria Sala’s article.
When I met Dominique Dupuy and his teaching on contemporary dance, it was a sudden surprise that made me feel full of joy, like when I first met Indian Dance.
How could this meeting be so important in my work as a dancer? How did this amplify my vision and practice of the millenary tradition of Indian Dance Theater?
Which was the artistic importance and improvement in methodology? Bharatanatyam includes experiences that touch different field of perception and way of thinking.
Performing different aspects of dance with its different shadows, a jewel that guide and lighten my dance work experience.

Balance in Dance
Resume by Nuria Sala
Step by step, moving from a foot to another, getting through space, opening new directions, dance goes on in a continuous balance game.
Body, Energy, movement fills the space with fluidity.
Weight leans and suspend itself in constant relation to the ground gravity and flight. In the balance of Dance there is continuous changing of contrasting movements. The great synchronicity of opposite signs.
Many are the balance’s synonyms: stability, right proportion, constancy, counterbalance, harmony, equality, wisdom, moderation.
The word “Balance” is repeated every time everywhere in textbooks and lessons. It opens a very wide world and many are the different point of views you can take. In my discipline I will take from both from classical dance to contemporary dance.
